The Eye Surgery Education Council, often referred to as the LASIK Institute, was launched in June of 2002 at the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s Annual Symposium and Congress. Early in 2003 the Eye Surgery Education Council came under the administration of the ASCRS Foundation, which is a 501©(3) organization whose mission includes public education, support of charitable eye care programs in third world countries as well as ophthalmic research.
Currently, the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery is forming, equipping, and training staff for the ASCRS Foundation Pediatric Eye Care Clinic located in Addis Abba, Ethiopia.
