Collecting Steak Knives
I have a friend with a collection of steak knives. He is a chef and he has two passions, cooking and eating. His favorite food is steak and he decided to start collecting steak knives after finding a set at an estate sale. He celebrates his purchases of steak knives with steak dinners.
This first set of steak knives were from the 1950s. He could not have been more pleased with his purchase. He decided that he was going to use the knives he collected at least once. He had me over for rib eye steaks that night. He really makes a great steak. The side dishes were phenomenal as well.
My friend enjoys finding really old sets of steak knives. He found a set last month that were made by Gerber Miming in 1948. They were very pretty and even came with their own wooden box. He cooked porterhouse steaks on the grill for their homecoming party. My vegetarian teenage daughter was with us that night and she used one of the steak knives to cut her grilled portobello mushroom cap.
He found one other set of steak knives recently that are of note. He found a set that looked quite old and the box
they were in said Sheffield, England. My guess would be that they were from the 1960s. He really liked the handles on the steak knives because they had some pearl inlay work. He served Beef Wellington the night he brought them home. He even served steamed asparagus with Hollandaise sauce.
I really like the weekends that my friend goes to estate sales. He always finds at least one thing that he can’t live without. Sets of steak knives don’t show up at every sale he goes to, though. He’ll only cook steaks if he buys a new set of steak knives for his collection. He brought home a new deck chair last weekend and grilled a huge fillet of salmon that we enjoyed on the deck.
