Another result in my Dogpile search for free virus scan took me to a product called Trend Micro Housecall. They offer to scan your computer for free while you surf the internet. You must agree to their terms and conditions before you run their program.
Stop-Sign.com offers a free virus scan. You must download their product to get the free scan. They say that symptoms of infection are slow opening files, constant pop-ups and lots of warnings about illegal operations. They also suggest that you use a free virus scan if you computer is just slow.

The free virus scan offered by Panda Software cannot eliminate spyware, dialers, security risks, hacking tools or jokes. There is also no internet tech support or e-mail tech support with the free virus scan.
Using a free virus scan is a good idea because malicious viruses can kill your computer. There is nothing more heartbreaking than having your computer get infected with bad things. There are really smart people coming up with new ways to attack other people’s computer, just for the fun of it. There are also a lot of really smart people that come up with ways to stop them.
