He repeats the process, moving one generation further from his original each time, not quite ad infinitum, but at least a few hundred times.<BR>The resulting image renders the original monochrome of the construction paper an arresting field of intricately textured black-and-white static. Produced in conjunction with an exhibition of Short's work at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, "Blue "presents all the steps involved in the creation of a single piece of this art. By 1519 Spanish soldiers were marveling at the wealth and extent of the Aztec Empire, and by the summer of 1521 they began to control it on behalf of Spain. A few Europeans...would admire the precious objects from New Spain and value them enough to save them, but most examples of art mobilier were either reduced to their component materials for reuse or were destroyed as works of the devil. It was not until the early twentieth century that finely crafted objects from ancient Mexico and Central America were appreciated as art by those in Europe and the Americas...<p>In 1912 Robert Bliss, living in Paris as a U.S. diplomat, began to collect Pre-Columbian pieces.... [His collection] of Pre-Columbian art from the land of the ancient Mexica---the old Aztec Empire---comprises a varied sampling of the best that the ancient cultures of western Mesoamerica had to offer. These objects present us with a treasury of artistic masterpieces, and help us to understand and appreciate the ancient peoples whose genius and skill produced such works."<p>"The Dumbarton Oaks collection of ancient art from the Central Highlands, Southwestern Highlands, and Gulf Lowlands of Mexico... includes singular objects of historic importance as well as fine examples of well-known types. At the time Robert Woods Bliss was establishing his collection, little was known about what the individuals who commissioned and created these objects thought about the meanings of specific materials. Yet Bliss's choices echo some ancient hierarchies of valued materials, especially those that were difficult to obtain and work, such as greenstone, shell, and gold. Luminous color and radiance captured the eye as easily in 1950 as in antiquity, although many associated meanings undoubtedly of importance in the ancient world still elude us today. Bliss eschewed other materials that were of profound importance in Pre-Hispanic Mexico---such as featherwork---perhaps in part due to the scarcity of such objects on the market in the twentieth century, as he did collect feather objects from the Andes. He collected ancient Mexican ceramics and wooden objects sparingly, focusing on a few objects of exceptional importance. In this sense the collection remains a personal, rather than comprehensive, selection of rare and finely crafted works."</td></tr></table><hr> Charles LeDray <table border=0><tr valign=top><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847835278"><img border="0" src="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/images/jackets/s/nojacket.gif" alt="Charles LeDray" title="Charles LeDray"></a></td><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847835278">Workworkwork</a><p><i>By Charles LeDray</i><p>£35.00 01 Jul 2010 Hardback Rizzoli International Publications</td></tr></table><hr> Josiah Mcelheny <table border=0><tr valign=top><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847834158"><img border="0" src="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/images/jackets/s/nojacket.gif" alt="Josiah Mcelheny" title="Josiah Mcelheny"></a></td><td><i>By Josiah McElheny</i><p>£40.00 01 Jul 2010 Hardback Rizzoli International Publications</td></tr></table><hr> Roy McMakin <table border=0><tr valign=top><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847833577"><img border="0" src="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/images/jackets/s/nojacket.gif" alt="Roy McMakin" title="Roy McMakin"></a></td><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847833577">When is a Chair Not a Chair</a><p><i>By Roy McMakin</i><p>£40.00 01 Jul 2010 Hardback Rizzoli International Publications</td></tr></table><hr> Mark Hampton <table border=0><tr valign=top><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847832880"><img border="0" src="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/images/jackets/s/nojacket.gif" alt="Mark Hampton" title="Mark Hampton"></a></td><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0847832880">An American Decorator</a><p><i>By Duane Hampton</i><p>£37.50 01 Jul 2010 Hardback Rizzoli International Publications</td></tr></table><hr> Telling Stories <table border=0><tr valign=top><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0810996510"><img border="0" src="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/images/jackets/s/nojacket.gif" alt="Telling Stories" title="Telling Stories"></a></td><td><a href="http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/welcome.jsp?source=rss&isbn=0810996510">Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg</a><p><i>By Virginia M. More On The Issue Of Art
There are many things out there today that we have come acknowledge as
fitting into the categories encompassing the realm of art, these areas in
particular range the gamut from paintings and sketches to sculpture and
architecture, but all these things have the common central idea of
expressing an artist’s interpretations of the world both within and without.
All the ideas that have passed before our collective eyes has had some
aspect of artistic merit attached to their concepts, some of these have

begun as works of art, but the way to an artist’s soul is through their
pieces of work.
Many people spend much of their personal time collecting pieces of art,
whether in the form of prints or the actual works themselves, and this is
usually because the artist has created something that the person who ends up
buying the piece has discovered to have some relevance or appeal in their
own lives. This is not absolutely true for all of those people who decide
to collect artwork, but the reasons of interest always seem to vary with the
individual that purchases the work, though this idea lies in those that feel
a particular piece conveys a specific message.
Artists of all varieties have been working to create a form of expression
which is original and unique to their personal proclivities, all artists
have a unique perspective that feels its’ way onto a canvas or object that
will reveal the purest sense of what the meaning is to this vision, and
producing a complete and multi-layered piece of work that fits a rather
general category of art. Not all art fits into a specific sub-category
under which art looms over indefinitely, the critics are in place to
classify the works into other categories or comparisons with that artwork
which shares traits with another piece, and sometimes these details are
striking enough to become a school of thought or a particular movement of
art.
With all these ideas and concepts flitting about of their own descriptive
personality after the artist releases the vision onto some medium that best
reveals or restricts the audience’s own personal experiences as a filter to
understand the piece on a level that the artist planned for, it is the role
of the artist to convey the emotion and mental reaction that they have to
form a distinct and utterly unique creation, and it is from this that they
cull the reflections of the passing times.
